A Clinical Study of Status Epilepicus

Forty-eight cases of status epilepticus, admitted. to, the Yonsei University Severance Hospital from..
Jan. 1970 to Dec. 1976, have been clinically analysed and the following results have been obtained.
1. The incidence of status epilepticus among, epilepsy was 5%
2. It was slightly commoner in man, with a ratio of 1.2:1. And age at onset ranged from 1 to 73, with the peak incidence of 3rd decade.
3. According to etiologic classification, there were 28 cases of idiopathic status epilepticus and 20 symptomatic status epilepticus which included of infection, cases of head trauma, CVD, brain turn or cysticercosis and metebolic disease in order.
4. 4. The precipitating factors of status epilepticusin 13 known epileptic cases were suddenly stopping-anticon-vulsant therapy (6 cases), infection (2 cases) and unknown (5 cases).
5. The EEG findings in 25 cases of status epilepticus during attack were 4 cases of generalized spark or sharp wave.
6. The focus of epileptogenicity in 58% of symptomatic status epilepticus was in the frontal lobe.
7. The morality rate in status epilepticus was 14. 5% and all cases died within a week.
